Grand Master Alexey Dreev Analyses

ImageBologan,V - Dreev,A / Poikovsky 2006 [B12]

I often play Caro-Kann on 1.e4. In this game the topical line was opted. I employed interesting novelty. My opponent, strong grandmaster Viorel Bologan, lingered (didn’t played 11.c4!), and got into troubles. So, this game is quite instructive.Click on the arrow to view the analysed games:

1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 Bf5 4.Nf3 e6 5.Be2 Nd7 6.0–0 Bg6 7.c3 Nh6 [7...a6] 8.Bxh6 gxh6 9.Nbd2 Be7!?

It’s an interesting novelty.

I decided abandon standard plan (with blow up f7-f6). Formerly immediate 9...f6 was employed, in the game V.Bologan-Z.Izoria (St.Vincent 2005) there was: 10.Nb3 Bg7 11.exf6 Qxf6 12.Ne1 e5 13.Bg4 Bf5 14.dxe5 Nxe5 15.Bxf5 Qxf5 16.Nd4 Qf7 17.f4 0–0 18.Nd3 Nc4 19.Rf3 Rae8 20.Qc2 Re4, and Black is OK. Also, Black employed f7-f6 after preliminary Bf8-g7 and castling; thus, in the game Smykovsky-Galkin (Internet 2004) there was: 9...Bg7 10.Re1 0–0 11.Nf1 f6 12.exf6 Qxf6 13.Ng3 e5 14.dxe5 Nxe5 15.Qd2 Rae8 16.Rf1 a6 17.Nxe5 Qxe5 18.Rae1 Qf4 19.Qxf4 Rxf4 20.Bf3 Rff8 21.Re3 Rxe3 22.fxe3 Re8, with good position for Black.

During my preparation for this game, it did not seem to me that all is so unclouded for Black after f7-f6: in many lines the maximal precision is required from Black’s side, in order not to come to worse position. To a certain extent, Viorel’s readiness to repeat his game against Z.Izoria confirms my conception. The move, introduced by me, leads to much more complicated positions.

10.Ne1

It’s fairly interesting maneuver. Also such moves as 10.c4, 10.Nb3, and 10.b4 worth attention.

10...c5!

Anyhow, this is planning move. But after the White Knight’s maneuver such move is purchased, of course.

11.Nb3 ?!

In case of 11.f4 the move 11…Qb6 is strong. On 11.Nd3 also 11...Qb6 can follow, but then White had a thrust 12.c4! in his disposal, with complications. The mostly principled would be 11.с4!, with further unclear position.

11...Qb6 12.dxc5

Bad is 12.Qd2 c4 13.Nc1 in view of 13…Nxe5! 14.dxe5 Bg5 15.Qd1 Qxb2.

12...Bxc5

Capturing on “c5” by Knight is patently weaker; in this case the pressure on the pawn “e5” would slacken.

13.Nf3

White did not obtain any advantage after the opening stage. In case of 13.Nc5 Nc5 White had a problems with protecting pawn “b2”.

13...Bf8!?

Right now the Black Bishop is transferred to “g7” through his starting place, in order to use the slackening of the pawn “e5”.

14.a4

I am not sure in this “active” move. As you will see, this move causes the weakening “b4”-square. Immediate 14.c4 would be better.

14…a6 15.c4

Viorel is striving to start a vivid pieces play as quick as possible. I have only finish the development of my pieces, and then my position will be better.

15...Be4!

The good way to hold square “d5”. After 15…dxc4 very strong would be 16.Nbd2!

16.a5 Qb4 17.Nbd2 Rd8

A strong move. The tension at the center is at culmination. After “normal” 17….Bg7 18.Nxe4 dxe4 18.Nd2 the position would be approximately balanced. Do not forget that Black’s pawns are doubled.

18.cxd5?!

Now the position became stabilize, and I am finishing the mobilization of my forces comfortably. Queen’s move deserved attention: 18.Qe1!? Qxb2 (18...Bg7? 19.Nxe4 Qxe1 20.Nd6+) 19.Nxe4 (19.cxd5 Bxd5 20.Bc4 Bc6! scarcely promise something for White) 19...dxe4 20.Rb1 Qa3 21.Nd4 Nc5!? (worse is 21…Bg7 22.Nxe6!? fxe6 23.Bh5+ Ke7 24.Qxe4 Bxe5 25.Rfe1) 22.Qd2 Qa4 with better chances for Black. Interesting would be also 18.Ra3!, then in case of 18…Qxb2 19.Rb3 Qa2 20.Rxb7 Bg7 (very dangerous is 20...Qxa5? 21.Nd4 Nxe5 22.Bh5!) 21.Nxe4 dxe4 22.Nd4 Nxe5 23.Qb3 Qxb3 24.Nxb3 White obtain the good prospect on the queen-side in this sharp ending. However, possible would be more discreet 18…Nc5 (preventing Ra3-b3) 19.cxd5 Bxd5 20.Qc2 Bg7 21.Rc1 Nd7.

18...Bxd5 19.Qc2 Bg7 20.Nc4

On 20.Ra4 there is the good reply 20...Qc5!

20...0–0

I managed to evacuate my King. White play reached a deadlock, his pawns are defenseless…

21.Rfd1 Rc8 22.b3

More stubborn would be 22.Ra4!? Qc5 23.Qc3 Rfd8.

22...Nxe5 23.Nfxe5 Bxe5 24.Ra4 Qe7

Its inaccuracy. I played more “firmly”, opted between this move and 24…Qc3. I think, 24…Qc3 would be the strongest.

25.Qd2 Bg7

White’s position looks quite difficult, but he could resist by 26.Nb6 Bb3 27.Nc8 Rc8 28.Rg4! Bd1, and then White has unexpected intermediate move in his disposal: 29.Qh6 f6 (the only move, bad is 29…Qf8 in view of 30.Bd3!) 30.Bd1 Rc5 – Black obtain the clear advantage but it’s not so easy to see is fulfilled, due to Bishops of opposite colors and weakness of “e6”-pawn.

26.Bf3?

After this awful move (played in strong zeitnot), I succeeded in driving the game for the win.

26…Bxf3 27.gxf3 Rfd8 28.Qe2 Qg5+ 29.Kf1 Rxd1+ 30.Qxd1 Rd8 31.Qc2 Qh5 32.Kg2 Qg6+!

The simplest.

33.Qxg6 hxg6 34.Rb4 Rd7 35.Nb6 Rc7 36.Na8 Bc3

White resign [0–1]
